A pilot by profession, Rahul manged to clinch a job in Jet Airways in 2000 allegedly due to his fathers influence.
But reports of his reflexes being slow led the management to discourage him flying.
He was finally taken off flying duties in 2003 and left Jet early in 2004.
However flying experts have something else to say.
"When he was training with us his reflexes were fine," Director Yash Air, Captain B K Tongia says.
Apparently Rahul was not happy with the pay packet offered to pilots.
"At that time the packets of pilots were not that good, so he decided to venture into business," Tongia says.
Rahul then opened a production house, which managed a deal from Doordarshan, but reportedly that the programme was not delivered in spite of advances being paid.
He wasn't famous for being a party animal but he was known to host small parties for close friends knew him, which is what seems to have happened on Thursday night.
Interestingly, his company last night included his late father's Man Friday, Bibek Bimen Maitra.
Not exactly in the pink of health, Maitra was known to be discreet and low profile.
Maitra had been the confidante of both Pramod Mahajan and former deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde and had almost become a member of the family.
His indiscretion last night surprised many who had known him closely.
