Death toll up, Rahul to visit stampede site

New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi will visit Jodhpur to gain first-hand information about the Chamunda Devi Temple stampede, which left at least 130 people dead on Tuesday.

An official spokesman said Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to reach Jodhpur from New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon.

He is expected to visit the Chamunda Mata Temple at eharangarh and hospitals where several of the injured are still being treated, the spokesman added.

The death toll rose to more than 150 on Wednesday. Another 150 are injured.

The Rajasthan government is holding a state-wide mourning for the pilgrims who died. A government spokesperson announced that no official function would be held in the state on Wednesday and that the national flag will fly by half mast at all government buildings.

A power failure may have been the cause of the stampede. Other reports say that the stampede began after rumours that a bomb had been planted at the temple. Meanwhile, there is speculation over whether the incident could have been averted.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje has ordered a judicial probe into the incident.

Jodhpur Divisional Commissioner Kiran Soni Gupta said about 15 to 20 people died on the spot while others succumbed later either on the way to hospitals or while being treated.

Barring a few women and children the deceased were mostly men, in the age group of 18 to 30. Unofficial reports put toll at 196.
