Calicut: From pride to shock in just 48 hours, the owner of Olive restaurant in Kozhikode might have been over the moon when AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi stepped in to have a meal and cup of tea, but soon after he left, the CPM-ruled local panchayat ordered the tea shop closed allegedly because of its unhygienic conditions and for serving contaminated drinking water.
"This shop has been serving below quality water for years now. We cannot allow it to go on. So the panchayat took a decision," says a member of the local panchayat, Rajesh.
The question people are asking is why the panchayat didn't close the shop before Rahul Gandhi came calling? While some local Congressmen allege the CPM is playing politics, some Rahul Gandhi admirers unexpectedly sided with the panchayat.
"This is not right. How can he make my leader drink such stale water," questioned one admirer.
Olive restaurant will remain shut for seven days pending an enquiry. The owner will perhaps now rue the moment Gandhi junior stepped into his shop for a cup of tea.
