Rahul's men get key social sector ministries

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Congress has gone all out for social sector ministries and minority related schemes, which without a doubt carry Rahul Gandhi's trademark stamp.

Call it the Kalawati effect but Rahul's discovery tour has changed the Congress attitude to social sector ministries.

So Arjun Singh and Hansraj Bhardwaj have been shown the door. Kapil Sibal and Veerappa Moily who are on the same wavelength with Rahul have been given important ministries.

Rahul had wanted a reformer in the Human Resource Development Ministry and an eager Kapil Sibal is ready with his plans.

"This ministry has enormous expanse. The important thing about this ministry is that it touches every home in India. It touches every child who goes to school, every boy and girl who goes to college, everybody who wants to do a masters degree. It truly represents the way forward for India. If we can get a roadmap for that way forward, which is constructive and job oriented and if we break out of the mindset of the past I think wen can do a lot with this ministry," says the new HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.

Rahul's men in the Union Ministry include Sibal, Minister for Law and Justice Veerapa Moily, Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khursheed, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister CP Joshi, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik and Minister of Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, another heavyweight, has been entrusted with the Health Ministry.

Social sector ministers are really a formidable team in Team Manmohan. Moily replaces HR Bhardwaj when the country is desperately in need of legislative reforms.

"There are several changes needed in this ministry. We need to work out the structure, the delivery system of justice in such a away that it can be accessible to every common man. The judicial reforms in the country will have to be in tune with the advanced countries," says Moily.

The mandate is being interpreted as thumbs up for flagship rural programmes like NREGA, Sarva Shikhsha Abhiyaan and the minority-related schemes.

No doubt the social sector portfolios carry the Rahul stamp.
