Rahul wants to connect youth and politics

New Delhi: Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi has expressed concern over “the disconnect” between today’s youth and politics.

Therefore, in keeping with the time trusted tradition of political yatras, Rahul Gandhi will head a yuva yatra (youth rally) in the poll-bound south-Indian states. After all, after Gujarat and Himachal, Congress’s next big challenge is Karnataka.

At crossroads, Congress is once again banking on the Gandhi charisma. But will Rahul Gandhi - who failed to swing votes in his party's favour - be able to do it?

“Aspirations of the youth need to be connected with leaders at the national and the grassroots level because India is a young country,” says Congress spokesperson, Jayanti Natarajan.

Rahul was recently inducted as general secretary in-charge of youth affairs. He campaigned in Gujarat and Himachal, drew crowds but not votes.

But the party doesn't fault him for that and wants to encash Rahul's popularity as much as possible.

Among other things, it wants to rope in Rahul in the planning of the Commonwealth Games of 2010.

After all, if his father Rajiv Gandhi is remembered and praised for the 1982 Asiad, Congress hopes Rahul too can recreate the magic.
