New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi's austerity journey came to a dramatic en when the Swarn Shatabdi Express that he was travelling in from New Delhi to Ludhiana was stoned near Panipat.
Fortunately no one was injured in the stone throwing incident on Tuesday night at around 2130 hrs IST as the Amritsar-Delhi Swarn Shatbadi Express arrived in Panipat.
The window panes of three coaches C-2, C-4 and C-7 were damaged and though no one was hurt, the attack created panic and uncertainty. Rahul was travelling in coach C-3.
"We are shocked and shaken. This has been done on purpose," one of the passengers remarked.
The Railway Police admitted that such attacks are not uncommon
"These things keep on happening. Children often pelt stone at trains," a Railway Police officer said
"Everything is possible. We cannot rule out any possibility. Whatever may be the case it will be known only in the morning once we conduct the investigation," said Inspector General V Kamraj.
The Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel accompanying Rahul patrolled the coaches for the rest of the journey. In any case the train journey from New Delhi to Ludhiana could prove to be the last ride in Rahul Gandhi's austerity trip.
But was the stone throwing incident some kind of a conspiracy or was it a mere coincidence?
But the matter becomes very serious since it was well known that a VVIP was on board and the seat number and coach were well known.
