Rains gone but potholes remain in Mumbai

Mumbai: Mumbaikars may have finally been done with the rain this season but they are now left to deal with another byproduct that comes with incessant rainfalls – potholes.

After only four days of rain, Mumbaikars are facing a bumpy ride to work owing to the numerous potholes on the roads which have also become a serious health hazard. Experts say that 3% of the miscarriages in Mumbai are caused by bad roads.

Activists allege that the authorities are more interested in passing the buck than doing something to solve the problem.

Activist, Sandeep Rane says "The BMC says the MMRDA has built the roads, its their fault and the MMRDA says that we have handed it over to the MMRDA."

The BMC has already shot off a letter to the MMRDA blaming its contractors for the sorry condition of the roads. Civic officials say that contractors are averse to using the carbon core technology which might be a lasting solution to the pothole menace.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, RA Rajeev says that the MMRDA now has an opposition to get them to use the technology properly.

However, whatever little action has been taken to solve the issue, it is hardly any consolation to Mumbaikars whose vehicles too are bearing the brunt of bad roads and potholes.

According to high court directives, citizens can initiate criminal proceedings against errant civic officials regarding potholes.
