Mumbai suburb faces floods in monsoon

Mumbai: People of Mumbai face many problems as monsoon arrives. An issue that hassles the city every year is flooding.

Juhu is one of Mumbai's most affluent areas, home to many TV and film celebrities. But Juhu is also one of the low lying areas of the city which makes it vulnerable during monsoon as it gets flooded every year due to heavy and continuous rainfall.

Though the area gets flooded every year the corporation does not seem to be coming up with any solutions leaving the residents angry and frustrated.

The solution is to widen the gutter in the are so the water can drain off. While the BMC did start working on it after the last monsoon, the work never got completed.

The residents of the area even staged a protest rally just before the rains started and the issue even found a mention in fellow resident Amitabh Bachchan's blog. But the BMC insists it's a temporary problem with no real solution.

"There is no problem as such, it's a low lying area so water gets collected. But it's a temporary phenomenon," says Additional Municipal Commissioner Kishore Gajbhiye.

It's a situation going from bad to worse, while no concrete steps are being taken to improve the drainage, the road repair work is being undertaken even after the monsoon has set in, which is adding to the resident's misery.

"Why is this work being done now and why couldn't it be done before the monsoon," questions, filmmaker and activist Ashoke Pandit.

Though It's just the start of the season and roads in Juhu are already waterlogged. It appears to be the same old story this monsoon.
