Raj effect: Haryana Marathi family threatened

Neenaz Ichaporia, CNN-IBN

Karnal: In an apparent fallout of Raj Thackeray’s- anti- migrant agitation- a Maharashtrian family from Jalgaon residing in Karnal is being threatened to leave the state

Kalpana Suryavanshi fears for her children’s safety. Two days ago their life was turned upside down when three unidentified armed men broke into their home, and threatened them to leave Haryana. Though they are terrified, Kalpana and her husband Vijay say they won't leave.

“We will not leave because, we were living happily here with a decent earning,” says Vijay Suryavanshi

Kalpana and Vijay are Maharashtrians, who moved to Haryana fifteen years ago. But as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena ups the ante against North Indians in Mumbai, this family is getting more nervous.. Kalpana and Vijay now keep a constant watch on their children, afraid to send them to school or let them go out to play.

“Whatever Raj Thackeray is doing is not right because what he is doing to others can happen to Maharashtrians in other places too,” says Kalpana Suryavanshi.

Meanwhile in Maharashtra the Marathi manoos cause has received further support from an unlikely source. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deskhmukh has demanded that Railway entrance exams should be conducted in Marathi, a demand made earlier by Raj Thackeray.

“When IAS exams can take place in Marathi, then why not other exams? we will write to the centre and make all efforts for this," says Deshmukh.

The opposition BJP -Shiv Sena says this is just an attempt by Deshmukh to prop up Raj Thackeray against them. For those like Kalpana and Vijay, this political game is beginning to prove a bit costly.
