Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has decided to bear the medical expenses of a local rickshaw puller's premature infant in Bharatpur. Rickshaw puller Bablu's wife died during delivery in September 2012, leaving behind a premature baby girl with anaemia.
With no one to look after the newborn, Damini, Bablu who was earning a living riding a rented rickshaw, carried the child in a sling around his neck. But with Bablu's plight catching the media's attention, help is on its way for the moment. The girl has now been shifted to a Jaipur hospital with her father and grandfather.
"It's tough to feed and take care of her. I have to hold her with one hand and steer the rickshaw with the other. If I find water when she soils my clothes then I wash them. I carry her milk bottle around with me," Bablu said.
The infant is now battling for life. "Her condition is critical and she is on ventilator support," Dr Jaikrishan Mittal, who is attending to her, said. "Her organs are affected with infection and she is also suffering from pneumonia. She is underweight and anemic," he said.
When the plight and dismal condition of the poor father caught the attention of people, they came to his help in different capacities. A pediatrician took the girl in his observation and suggested to district collector Gyan Prakash Shukla to shift her to Jaipur for better treatment.
"The girl is underweight and anemic though she is stable. The doctor suggested her shifting to Jaipur for a better treatment," the collector said. "On the basis of advice of doctors from Bharatpur and Jaipur, it was decided to shift her to Jaipur today and the government will bear the entire expenditure of her treatment," he said.
