Ajmer / Jaipur: What are class X students in Rajasthan being taught? These are a few passages taken out from their textbooks:
a) "The J&K government works under pressure from the terrorists. Some leaders are hand in glove with them due to which the Rehabilitation Bill was passed. Section 370 was kept in the Constitution so that appeasement and pressure tactics can be continued."
b) "According to J&K's former governor Jagmohan, India has sheltered terrorism in a strange manner."
d) "Choudhary Charan Singh believed that if the country has to be saved, then instead of Nehruvian economic policies, Gandhian policies will have to be put in place."
The previous Vasundhara Raje government in the state had introduced these textbooks with a saffron agenda. Now, the youth wing of the Congress is demanding that they be scrapped immediately.
“They are poisoning the students with communalism. We will not tolerate it,” NSUI President Naurat Gujjar said.
But surprisingly, the Congress government in the state is in no hurry to drop the controversial textbooks.
“If they have studied that for four years then what's the big deal about another year,” Rajasthan Education Minister Master Bhanwarlal said.
The state Education Minister says it is too late to get the books printed all over again since the academic session has begun. Meanwhile, officials of the education board are awaiting directions from the government.
“These books have been a part of the syllabus since 2006. Now whatever the government directs us to do we will do it accordingly,” Secretary of Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education MR Sharma said.
The mounting body of such textbook controversies puts a question mark on political pervasion in what is being taught in the schools.
