Rajasthan villagers back rape victim's fight

Jaipur: Rape victim Sheila Devi (name changed) has been fighting for justice for the last 13 years.

Sheila was raped by former Rajasthan DIG Madhukar Tandon who has been absconding.

Now she has got the support of her entire village of Ramwas in her fight for justice.

The villageers have elected Sheila's husband as their Sarpanch, hoping that he would take up their issues too with the same grit.

"We elected him as our leader because he took on an IPS-rank official and fought till he got dismissed. Now our struggle is to get him arrested," says Ramwas resident Lalit Kishore Meena.

But it has not been easy for the couple. Soon after they filed a case against Tandon in 1997, the victim's husband was forced to leave his job as a police constable.

Now the community's support has given them new hope.

"I have faith in the law and I'll take up the issues of the village with the same grit," says Ramvas Sarpanch and Shiela's husband, Khyali Ram.

"There's a small reason to be happy in our lives after a long time. But until he (Tandon) gets caught this happiness means little to me. He has ruined my life," says Sheila.

After CNN-IBN took up the campaign for justice for this tribal woman the Rajasthan government swung into action and announced a cash reward of Rs 50 thousand on Tandon. But the former DIG continues to evade the law

Far away from candle light protests Khyali Ram's election as the sarpanch marks the coming together of the people for a cause - justice for Rajasthan's Ruchika.

With their resolve to get themselves heard growing the question the people here are now asking is when will this tribal woman's wait for justice end.
