Raje tries to douse Gujjar fire, offers quota

New Delhi: In a controversial move to pacify the agitating Gujjars in Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje government has sent a letter to the Centre recommending six per cent reservation for four nomadic tribes including Gujjars.

This proposed six per cent reservation is above and over the 49 per cent reservations for SC/STs and OBC in the state.

"The Central government has to think about it now," she was quoted by PTI as saying.

The Rajasthan Government had earlier forwarded the report of the Chopra committee, constituted by the state to look into the demand by Gujjars for inclusion in the ST category, to the Centre highlighting its recommendation.

Raje said the quota of 4-6 per cent could be something akin to nomadic tribes without disturbing the reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

This comes just before the planned maha padav by Gujjars demanding ST status on January 21 led by expelled BJP MLA and Gujjar leader Prahlad Gunjal. They have threatened to hold up all roads to the state capital.

The other Gujjar faction led by Colonel Bainsla have threatened to block the Bharatpur-Agra Highway.

Gujjars have been on the warpath in Rajasthan, demanding Scheduled Tribe status for the last one year.
