New Delhi: As the first anniversary of the violent Gurjar agitations of 2007 comes closer, similar scenes are being played out once again in Rajasthan.
The Gurjars are not budging from their demand for Scheduled Tribe status and with the situation critical, Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhra Raje has written to the prime minister seeking four-six per cent separate quota for the community
Rajasthan's Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Rajendra Singh Rathore says, "The Rajasthan government is requesting all states to convene and a national consensus should be sought for the Gurjar quota issue."
However, Gurjar leader, Colonel Bainsla sounds positive about the proposal.
"It is a good start, a healthy start and we welcome it, but I will give my comments after having perused the letter," he says.
Nonetheless, the Centre has to agree first.
Political parties are in a bind now. Neither the BJP nor Opposition Congress want to take any step which would alienate other communities like the 12 per cent Meenas. Even the Congress takes the easy way out of blaming Raje.
Congress MP, Sachin Pilot says, "Now the time has come for the state government to realise that it is its own over -commitments that have led to the situation that we are in today."
However, the real people caught in the cross-fire though are the thousands of passengers stranded at railway stations due to the violence.
