Rajeev's Recco: Hard Candy

Mumbai: There are disturbing films and then are disturbing films.

My recommendation this week, Hard Candy is one of those sadistic films that will make you uncomfortable, it'll make you shift in your seat and it will leave you all hot and bothered.

It's a film about a 14-year-old girl who entraps a 32-year-old paedophile on the Internet, gets herself invited to his home, and quickly has him strapped down and helpless.

It's one of those rare films that carefully treads the line between titillation and revenge, and its all held together by a heroic performance by Ellen Page the 17-year-old actress who plays the central role.

The interesting thing is, this isn't your typical, conventional thriller. For the most part, the film has only two characters who spend pretty much the entire duration of the film talking to each other.

It's filmed largely in one house and it keeps you involved in what's going on because you haven't seen anything quite like it before.

Patrick Wilson, the actor who plays the little girl's hostage, also delivers a brave performance, squealing and begging, using everything from polite requests to threats as he tries to talk this girl out of castrating him.

It's the sort of story that turns sick and really challenges you to continue watching. If you do manage to watch the film from start to finish, you'll realise it's a bold, brave effort but it's obviously not for the faint hearted.

So gather your guts and rent Hard Candy on DVD, and see if you really have the stomach for it.
