In North Bergen, New Jersey, it was clear that Rajini’s appeal cut across barriers of age, gender, language and even nationality.
“Rajini, nothing else but Rajini,” said a young fan. “We are fortunate to see our leader’s film on the first day, that too in America,” said another fan.
“My friend told me I have to see this movie because of the Rajinikanth. So here I am, and he promised to translate all the way through,” said a young Russian lady.
The theatre sold over 3,300 tickets for Sivaji in just a couple of days, that’s three times as much as this year’s previous hit Pokkiri collected in two weeks.
Although the exhibitors paid twice as much for Sivaji compared to Rajini’s previous film Chandramukhi, they are confident of making money.
“My cellphone rings 24 hours throughout the day and they are looking for tickets. We opened three or four extra shows and all the shows are sold out. We are very happy to screen this movie over New York and New Jersey,” said the Sivaji exhibitor in New York and New Jersey,” P Saravanan.
Despite initial hiccups with the print, the fans here had a blast. After all, who was here just to see the movie?
“Every frame that Rajni is on we’re going to shout and make as much noise as possible,” said one of the audience members.
