Arushi case: Rajkumar destroyed evidence; CBI

CNN-IBN | Updated Jul 12, 2008 at 03:59pm IST

New Delhi: The CBI has told the court that they have arrested Rajkumar, the domestic help of Durranis, based on the results of several tests conducted on him at the Forensic Sciences Laboratory. The investigating agency sought a 15-day remand of Rajkumar but got a 14-day remand.

The CBI has also told the court that Rajkumar in his statement has confessed that he had first switched of Arushi's mobile and then destroyed it.

He has allegedly told the CBI that he will help in recovering Hemraj's cellphone as well as the murder weapon.

According to the CBI, Rajkumar has also confessed to his involvement in the crime.

Rajkumar was arrested after the CBI recovered a blood-stained T-shirt from his house. CBI sources now say it's clear that Rajkumar destroyed evidence but they are yet to determine if he was at the crime scene.

CBI Joint Director, Arun Kumar had said on Friday that a white T-shirt stained with blood was found in Rajkumar's house.

"The T-shirt had been sent to Gujarat for examination and a forensic team there had confirmed that it contained blood stains of a human being. It has now been sent for advanced investigation to Hyderabad and Rajkumar has been arrested," Arun Kumar had stated.

The white T-shirt is concrete material evidence that the CBI has found. The team in Hyderabad will conduct a DNA test on the blood on the T-shirt so that they can determine whose blood it is.

Rajkumar had been picked up by the CBI and questioned twice before. He was named by Dr Talwar's compounder, Krishna, during interrogation. Up until now, Krishna was the prime suspect in the case, but the focus has now shifted to Rajkumar.

Rajkumar had already been subjected to brain-mapping, lie-detector tests and a narco-analysis when he was held earlier. The CBI is now claiming that there were discrepancies in Rajkumar's statements.

The Durranis are close associates of the Talwars.

Friday's Developments

Meanwhile, on Friday morning, Krishna was taken by the CBI to the Talwar residence where the CBI had proceeded to recreate the crime scene, however with not much success.

Krishna was then produced in court as his four-day custody ended on Friday. The court has sent him into judicial custody till July 11.

After hearing Krishna's lawyer's arguements - stating that Krishna was tortured in CBI jail and demanding a medical examination - the court has ordered that Krishna be medically examined before being sent to Dasna jail. Krishna's lawyer has also demanded that he be released as there is no proof that he was involved in the case.

Last Monday, Krishna had broken down in court saying that the CBI was torturing him. The court on Friday dismissed the application for his discharge.

Meanwhile, the CBI has said that they don't seek a further remand for Krishna.

According to the CBI, Krishna had confessed to his involvement in the murders of Arushi and Hemraj. He has been subjected to narco-analysis and lie-detector tests. He has been in CBI custody since June 13 when he was arrested.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, court reserved its order on the bail application of Arushi's father, Dr Rajesh Talwar. This, after CBI told the court that they could not give him a clean chit as yet.

Talwar's bail application had come up for hearing in Ghaziabad on Thursday. Rajesh Talwar - who is also an accused in the case - has been in jail for over a month now.
