New Delhi: BJP chief Rajnath Singh has been re-elected as the BJP president for the second time. Having taken over from L K Advani in December 2005 under rather testing times Rajnath has had a much smoother year.
It’s the day of coronation of Rajnath Singh as the BJP president. While the decision to re-elect Rajnath Singh itself was a foregone conclusion, the joy and smiles on the faces of the BJP supporters had a different tale. They had waited a long time for an opportunity to celebrate.
“I thank all of you for showing faith in me,” Singh said.
The function itself began in typical BJP style. First a puja at Rajnath Singh's house and then dot at 1200 hrs, IST – a time chosen by Rajnath Singh's astrologers – he decided to accept all congratulations.
“The party has shown great progress under him,” NDA Chairman Atal Bihari Vajpayee said.
“These are all good signs. I am sure BJP will grow, “former BJP president Advani said.
In his latest term as BJP president, Rajnath Singh will have many questions to answer. But perhaps the only thing that may be comforting him the most is that no one in the last year has threatened to dislodge him from his post.
That though could well change, UP Assembly elections are just around the corner. On his own home turf if Rajnath Singh, the Thakur leader, fails to boost up his party's performance all the signs of celebrations could well change very soon.
