Srinagar: Young Kashmiri boys and girls looking for some private space this Valentine's Day are likely to run into a dedicated bunch of moral cops. The activists of the radical group Dukhtarani-Millat led by their firebrand leader Asiya Andrabi has already declared a war on Valetines Day.
“We will ask the shopkeeper not to display cards and gifts. They should not force us to take action. This is not our culture. Professing illegal love and affection is against our culture,” says Andrabi.
They may be on different sides of the religious divide but Andrabi, who has asked Muslim women to observe the purdah and shun western dresses actually endorses the actions of Pramod Muthalik’s Sri Ram Sene in Mangalore.
“No religion is in favour of spreading obscenity. If they want to put a stop, they are okay,” adds Andrabi.
The police say they would prevent law and order problems in the valley.
“We are choosing a middle path. There are laws both to prevent obscenity and disruption of public order,” says SSP Srinagar A Mujtaba.
But everybody knows what that means.. For young lovers in Kashmir, it is not going to be a very happy Valentine's Day.
