New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday criticised both yoga guru Baba Ramdev and Delhi Police for the midnight crackdown on Ramdev's agitation at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi last June that led to the death of one person.
The court called the police action an abuse of power and also held the yoga guru guilty of negligence. The court also ruled that Rs 5 lakh be paid as compensation, 25 per cent of which has to be borne by Ramdev's trust, to the family of Rajbala who died in the stampede.
After the Supreme Court verdict, Ramdev, during a press conference, said, "I will announce about the next agitation shortly. The agitation will be a do or die battle."
While the Supreme Court held the Delhi Police guilty of abusing power, it also rapped Ramdev for not vacating the premises when the police asked him to do so.
The Delhi Police, which has always maintained that there was provocation from Ramdev's camp, now has been asked to file cases against its own officers as well as Ramdevs supporters.
"We will take action against the officers, who exceeded their authority. We will abide by whatever directions are there. We will implement the orders. We will register case against both police and public who had indulged in the destruction of public property" said Delhi Police Commissioner BK Gupta.
The Commissioner also didn't rule out filing a case against the yoga guru himself.
Meanwhile Ramdev's counsel and BJP MP Ram Jethmalani took on Home Minister.
"I want to know who has given power to the Home Minister...The police was found guilty of aggression. This should make somebody resign...Delhi Police is not the real culprit. Real guilty are the political masters. Of course, of course (Chidambaram should resign). He is the one who is responsible for this tragedy," Jethmalani told a joint press conference with Ramdev in New Delhi.
The Delhi Police has said that it will abide by the court order. For now the Government will be relieved that it did not have to take the entire responsibility for the crackdown that took place on the night of June 4, 2011.
