New Delhi: The ground near the Red Fort is where one of the biggest and most grand Ramlila takes place.
What popular mythological TV serial maker Ramanand Sagar did in 78 weeks, Ramlila actors have to accomplish in nine days.
Mammoth sets, a huge stage, larger than life props, hired professional actors and a budget that runs into almost 50 lakhs. But the main attraction still remains Ravana. But as the small crowd here suggests, even he can't draw in an audience who are more interested in enjoying the mela than the Ramlila.
Far away from this grand upscale Ramlila is another small group of performers who enact the mohala Ramlila.
Guys wear sarees to play the female parts while the neighbourhood aunty keeps the young audience in check.
It's always a full house there and with most homes going without even a TV set, entertainment in any form is more than welcome. There are no sponsors here. The contributions come from the audience and every donation -- even a 10-rupee note -- is a big deal.
Badal Khan is considered the best actor of one such mandali. Though the Ramlila symbolises the victory of good over evil , here -- in this small park it does a bit of everything -- it entertains, educates, brings a smile to young faces but most importantly it keeps the triumph of the human spirit alive.
