Ramzan starts, Muslims over the world rejoice

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Saudi Arabia will start the Muslim fasting month of Ramzan on Thursday along with most fellow Gulf Arab states.

State religious panels in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain said the crescent moon was sighted after nightfall, signaling the start of Ramzan.

Ramzan is the time when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. The timing can vary in different countries depending on the sighting of the new moon, which marks the start of the month in Islam's lunar calendar.

During the month of Ramzan, businesses and offices reduce opening hours during the day and often open in the evenings. In India, Ramzan will begin on Friday.

Spiritual leaders and religious scholars called upon the faithful to observe the month as a period of devotion, penance and charity.

In a message, Indian Union Muslim League supremo, Panakkad Syid Homahhadali Shihab Thangal, urged the members of the community to give prominence to charitable and humanitarian tasks as the message of Islam is love, compassion and charity.
