London: Three years after Mangal Pandey: The rising, Director Ketan Mehta is ready with yet another 19th century icon on celluloid - famous painter Raja Ravi Varma. Mehta's latest film, Rang Rasiya or Colours of Passion is based on the painter's life and his relationship with his muse Sugandha.
“He was a colorful character and a controversial one. 100 years ago His paintings of nudes - he was dragged to court on charges of obscenity.
He won the case and look at India and the culture of intolerance that is being perpetrated I felt it was an extremely relevant story to tell today,” says Director, Colours of Passion, Ketan Mehta.
Actor Randeep Hooda plays the painter while Nandana sen plays his sensual muse Sugandha. The film also includes veterans like Paresh Rawal and Deepti naval.
“Its always on your mind that this is the guy whose prints of paintings you have been praying to and yet playing him with all his flaws, its is one of the most interesting roles I have done so far,” says actor Randeep Hooda.
“Sugandha is the quintessential child woman. Hungry for love, generous yet possessive. Extremely traditional yet not afraid to break the rules of her time because she has such faith is Ravi Varma's vision,” says actor Nandana Sen.
The film, which was premiered at the London Film Festival last week, is due to be released in India in January next year.
