Mamata Banerjee's West Bengal government announces Rs 30,000 compensation for minor rape victims

Kolkata: The West Bengal government on Thursday announced a compensation scheme for the victims of torture and rape. As per the scheme announced by the government, the compensation for a rape victim who is a minor is Rs 30,000 while that for other such victims is Rs 20,000.

However, in case there is loss of life, the victim’s family will be given a compensation of Rs 2 lakh.

Also, different amounts of compensation have been declared for the victims if there is loss of limb or if handicap is caused to the victim.

A committee under the District Magistrate of each district would be constituted to verify the truth in such allegations.

If a victim suffers 80 per cent handicap, he/she would be given a compensation of Rs 50,000 or above while in case of 40-80 per cent handicap, a compensation of Rs 20,000 would be given. For those suffering less than 40 per cent handicap, the amount is Rs 10,000.

Also, if there is any injury causing serious mental agony, the compensation is Rs 10,000.

The decisions were taken at a state Cabinet meeting held at Writer's Building on Thursday. It was also decided that a committee under the District Magistrate of each district would be constituted to verify the truth in such allegations.
