New Delhi: B B Mohanty is a DGP-level police officer in Orissa, but today he is on the run from law like a criminal.
Mohanty is charged with using his influence to help his son Biti - convicted of rape - jump parole and disappear.
His deadline to appear in a Jaipur court, set by Supreme Court, ran out on Monday but Mohanty failed to show up.
Rajasthan police is ready to arrest him. “All legal recourse that’s available to us for placing him under arrest and producing him in the court will be followed,” said IGP Jaipur O P Gehlotra.
However, Mohanty's lawyers say they will appeal against the FIR. “We may think of approaching the Rajasthan HC to quash the FIR,” said Mohanty’s lawyer Debashish Panda.
But as his lawyer fights to delay his arrest, Mohanty's home state Orissa is keeping its hands off. “Whatever the court’s judgement is, the law will take its course,” said Orissa CM Naveen Pattnaik.
With Mohanty senior following in Biti's steps and running away from from the law, the "original sin" of the son has been put on the backburner.
Rajasthan Police was probably banking on Mohanty's surrender in court on Monday to get to Biti.
But so far, all they have is a rape convict on the run for the last four months, and a senior policeman who is evading the law that he is supposed to uphold.
