Ahmedabad: Nikunj Tapasia, involved in an accident in which his child fractured his leg, has been making the rounds of the lower courts for the last three and a half years.
Though Tapasia’s complainants never showed up, he came back for every hearing.
However, there is good news for Tapasia now, and he will not have to wait for too long. With all small cases being dealt with very quickly at the new evening courts in Gujarat, his case will be disposed off in less than two weeks.
“For three years, I was simply making rounds of the courts. It was then that my advocate suggested that we approach the evening court. If this concept continues, it will be beneficial for all,” Tapasia says.
Since the first evening court of the country was set up in Gujarat in November last year, over 19,000 cases have been settled so far.
Today, 42 evening courts are functioning in six districts and will help clearing 31 lakh cases pending in the state.
The Gujarat High Court now wants evening courts in all 25 districts. It's not just the litigants, lawyers, especially junior advocates too are a happy lot
“It's a great concept for junior lawyers like us, who get to argue the cases. Also, its is very convenient for people who cannot visit courts during the day,” says Advocate, Ahmedabad Rural District Court, Javal Belani.
What started as a pilot project is fast becoming a tool to settle cases that have been pending for years. The mantra of the country's first evening courts is dealing with petty cases quickly and effectively.
