Madurai: Narayanan Krishnan, a former five star chef who left his job, to feed the homeless was CNN-IBN's Real Hero in 2008 and went on to become a CNN Hero in 2010. It's been 10 years since the former five star chef decided to leave his promising career and dedicate his life to feeding the homeless.
In 2008, Narayanan Krishnan was recognised as a Real Hero by CNN-IBN for his selfless service of providing three meals a day to over 400 homeless elderly and mentally challenged people and since then Krishnan says life has changed.
"After I got the CNN-IBN award, Akshaya trust got recognition, donations started pouring in. I bought a land for my dream project to set up a home for the destitute," Krishnan said. International recognition followed as Krishnan was honoured as a CNN Hero in 2010.
His dream project is the Akshaya Home at the outskirts of Madurai that will be ready by December 2012 if donations keep pouring in. Krishnan wants to house those he feeds in a sprawling campus and rehabilitate them into the society. But Krishnan is also thinking beyond. He wants to set up similar dormitories across Tamil Nadu.
Till then a shared meal, words of wisdom and a smile keep him going.
