Mumbai: They could be called the Bunty and Babli of the banking world. Two fraudsters, Dilip Patel and Nita Patel, have been on the run from the Mumbai Police for almost a year now.

The couple have been accused of duping almost 14 banks to the tune Rs 3.25 crores. These include Punjab National Bank (PNB), Bank of Baroda, Bank of India and ING Vysya Bank.

In July 2003, the couple had taken loans from various banks on the basis of forged documents for the an upmarket appartment in Powai.

But within a period of 3 months, the cheques towards EMIs on the loans started bouncing.

When calls to the couple went unreturned, bank officials came to the building and were shocked to discover that the couple had absconded.

Thereafter, Punjab National Bank filed a police complaint with Juhu police station in May last year.

"Further investigations revealed that all the documents were forged. When we checked with the builder, they also said that the documents were forged. Banks have no hope of making recoveries," says senior Inspector of Police, Juhu police, Pradeep Shinde.

None of the banks can make recoveries and their only respite is the appartment, which has been mortgaged to all of them.

As cases against the couple lie registered in at least three police stations in the city, the couple is still on the run.
