Often even an average film can be elevated purely by the performances of its leads, and the film I want to recommend today, Prime is a perfect example of that.
I rented Prime from my DVD library because it had a fairly interesting plot, but more so because it stars two fantastic actresses whose movies I never miss – Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman.
In a nutshell, the film's about 37-year-old divorcee Uma Thurman and a good-looking 23-year-old painter whom she meets, and falls in love almost instantly. But there's a problem – a big problem actually. The young man in question happens to be the son of Thurman's shrink, played by Meryl Streep.
Now based on what you just heard, you'd imagine this is a clever romantic comedy, right? Well, the thing is, this film is not a romantic comedy. It is in fact a drama, which throws up some pertinent questions.
Essentially there are two big dilemmas that trouble the three protagonists - one, of course, is the age issue. Uma Thurman is way older than her new boyfriend. And two, the whole professional relationship Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman share as shrink and patient, is upset by the fact that Meryl's son is dating her patient.
So, what must Meryl Streep do now?
To be entirely honest, I didn't think this is a great film, but like I said earlier, I happily watched the entire film and even enjoyed most of it because both Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman are fabulous in it.
I mean only Meryl Streep can make even mundane scenes come to life with her spontaneous performances.
And watching the drop-dead gorgeous Uma Thurman have such love problems is so reassuring to the rest of us because it just makes all of us feel like this can happen to anyone.
Also look out for Bryan Greenberg, the young actor who plays Uma Thurman's painter boyfriend and Meryl Streep's son in the film. He's actually such a good actor who's got some great screen presence because he really manages to hold his own in scenes with both these brilliant ladies.
I'm not going to recommend that you go out and buy yourself a DVD of Prime because I'm not sure it's a film you may want to watch more than once. But do go and rent the film because it's like a guilty pleasure that you could surely indulge yourself with on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
