Mumbai : Released in December 2008 Aamir Khan's Ghajini has become the biggest box-office grosser ever. Over 235 crores have been collected from ticket windows worldwide and still running. Shah Rukh Khan starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi also ran to packed houses.
"Its not recession, there will be some correction," says Shahrukh Khan.
But these numbers tell a different story. 20 employees laid off from Bollywood's biggest production house Yashraj Films, 30 from one of Indian television industry's most prolific production houses - Balaji Telefilms and 60 from the UTV conglomerate.
These are just the initial figures trickling in of layoffs in the entertainment sector, with production houses and film studios tightening their budgets and thinning down their employee rolls to lower production costs.
Earlier in January, Yashraj Films' CEO Sanjeev Kohli's made an exit from the company raising quite a few eyebrows, rumours were abound that Kohli did not put in his papers but was asked to leave.
However none of the companies involved were willing to speak on the sensitive issue. With most companies in the entertainment sector looking at reducing costs some companies have asked their top management level to get ready for a 20 per cent pay cut.
It seems, just like the rest of the private sector - Bollywood too will have to get lean and mean to see it through these tough times.
