Recognising sleep apnea, treating it

New Delhi: Snoring is something we are conditioned to laugh off or consider annoying at worst. However, it could be a sign of a serious sleep disorder.

Sleep apnea is a condition where the person literally stops breathing during sleep. Breathing can stop anywhere between 10 to 60 seconds at a time, depleting the bloodstream and brain of vital oxygen supply.

The condition forces you to wake up at regular intervals, even before you can reach rapid eye movement (REM) or deep sleep.

“People who are on treatment say that they have been reborn because they get a better quality of sleep. Patients tell us they have not slept for four years or five years,” says pulmonologist, Dr Nevin Kishore.

The most common and effective treatment is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or (CPAP)

Says sleep Specialist, Dr M S Kanwar, “In obstructive sleep apnea airways tend to collapse and obstruct the air passage so the preset pressure that we set through the CPAP will keep the airways open.”

Ashutosh Verma, a lawyer, did not know he had sleep apnea for over 10 years until three months ago he was diagnosed and put on the C PAP machine.

After years of suffering, Ashutosh can hardly believe how quickly his life has turned around by the use of C PAP machine. He swears by the treatment.

"I never dreamt earlier until I used C PAP. I get good sleep now and good dreams too. In other words, a complete sleep,” says Verma.

In less severe cases, weight loss and reducing alcohol intake and smoking can also help treat sleep apnea.
