Post-Singur, investors apprehensive: Infosys

CNN-IBN

Bangalore: Software major Infosys has expressed that it is looking closely at the Singur situation in West Bengal.

But Infosys also reiterates that it has not taken any decision on whether to pullout of the state in the near future.

The reaction has come close on the heels of the recent Singur crisis involving the Tata Nano plant.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya had assured the Infosys management on Wednesday that the government would be responsible for the Infosys employees' safety.

"The Infosys management had issued a statement in the papers that they are afraid of coming to West Bengal. I talked to my colleague Debesh Das to immediately contact Infosys and we have assured them that the government of West Bengal takes all responsibility. We assure that there will be no problem when Infosys comes here, constructs buildings and start operations," he said.

When contacted by CNN-IBN, the company said, "We read the statement that West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb gave on Wednesday. The Chief Minister spoke to us about the situation in Singur and investments in the state. He has assured the safety of employees and we are very encouraged by it."

Speaking earlier to the media, Infosys director , Mohandas Pai had said, "There is non-enforcement of the High Court order. This has created concern and apprehension in the minds of investors."

Further, the recent protests in Singur have also shown that the government or the courts are unable to control the situation.

Infosys had planned to invest Rs 250 crore and set up a development centre on the outskirts of Kolkata. The project would have provided employment to around 5,000 people.

But the second largest software development company in the country insists that its decision on whether to continue to chase the project in West Bengal or not depends on how well their concerns for the growth and stability of their employees are addressed in that scenario.
