On Board INS Viraat: Sea Harriers taking off and landing is what impressed the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the most.
Called the White Tigers, these fighters fly at speeds beyond 900 km per hour and pack a deadly punch. And after that, the vertical landings that defy the very laws of physics.
Weatherwise, the Indian Navy couldn't have asked for a better day to take the Prime Minister out to sea. 100 km off the coast of Goa, in the Arabian Sea, half the Western Fleet amassed to display the combat capability of the Indian Navy.
Among the various displays at the occasion was the hip-to-ship fuel replenishment that gives the Indian navy its claim to being a Blue Water Navy.
But it was the grand finale when a surface to surface missile was shot by INS Gomti targetting INS Ganga that took everyone's breath away.
The highly sophisticated Barak weapon system was deployed by INS Ganga to strike down the missile in mid-air.
Before his departure, the Prime Minister was also accorded a ceremonial steam past where all the ships that has participated in the fleet review filed past the INS Viraat with all the sailors massed up on deck to salute him.
"To realise its destiny, India has to be a major trading nation of the world. And if we're going to be a major trading nation of the world, we must have a very strong navy," Manmohan Singh said.
And when the Prime Minister left the Viraat, he carried with him more than just memories of his day at sea. He was presented a replica of the INS Trincomalee and a painting of the host ship. And to remind him of his stay, an album of photographs.
