Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya has promised that no SEZs will be set up in Nandigram. But villagers in Nandigram are still skeptical.
In fact, a government team conducting an inquiry into the March 14 firing had to back off on Thursday because of a demonstration by hundreds of angry women of Sonachura village in Nandigram.
"We don't believe him, he's a traitor," says one of them angrily.
Two weeks after the clash that killed 14 people, residents say they are still being threatened by CPI-M leaders to give up their land.
They allege the Left party cadres hurl bombs in their village every night to scare them.
"We are scared to live here, they keep throwing bombs. But we don't know where to go," says a villager.
On the surface, life in Nandigram looks normal. But clearly many villagers have lost faith in the administration and ironically, also in the party that they supported for a long time.
People of Sonachura village haven't minced their words that they don't believe in Buddhadeb Bhattacharya's verbal promises, and until the state government announces another location for the chemical hub their battle will not stop.
