New Delhi: The big question now is how does India deal with the terror strikes? Will a tougher anti-terror law help?
In an interview to CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Home Minister Shivraj Patil says he is open to POTA being re-introduced, but only if Parliament approves it. However, he ruled out approving specific laws for states like MCOCA.
Rajdeep Sardesai: Are you saying there's full co-operation between Centres and states today in taking on terror? Are you confident of that, despite the fact that certain states like Maharashtra have a MCOCA law but other states don't have it?
Shivraj Patil: There was TADA, it was repealed. Then MCOCA came into existence and then there was POTA - it was also repealed. Now they are asking that POTA should be re-enacted. That is a thing that can be considered in Parliament and if you have the support of the Members of Parliament by all means you can get it passed - even by moving a Private Members Bill you can get it done if it is possible.
Rajdeep Sardesai: But state governments don't need Parliament approval to enact a law. They just need your approval.
Shivraj Patil: I can't accept a law which has been repealed by Parliament.
