Chennai: After months of speculation, the Left Front officially joined hands with AIADMK on Friday.
"We have decided to meet again and work out the modalities of the alliance,” CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat announced shortly after meeting AIADMK chief Jayalalitha, making it official that the Left would fight the Lok Sabha elections along side the AIADMK.
The Left already has an alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh and is in talks with Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), but the challenge would be to find a prime ministerial candidate in a grouping of regional parties.
Karat’s party had earlier toyed with the idea of allying with actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth in Tamil Nadu, but Vijayakanth is yet to prove his ability to win seats in an election.
The AIADMK too hopes to gain from a strong anti-incumbency factor against the ruling DMK government.
The electricity crisis in the state has resulted in severe resentment against Karunanidhi's government, but to fight the DMK-Congress alliance Jayalalitha needs a strong ally at the state level.
Perhaps, that’s the reason why she prefers the Left over the BJP, which has a negligible presence in the state.
