Cauvery water dispute: SC tells K'taka to release 9000 cusecs water to TN

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the Karnataka government to release up to 9000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery daily to Tamil Nadu till October 20.

Tamil Nadu is facing a severe shortage of irrigation water due to rainfall deficit.

Passing the order, the apex court said that it was unfortunate that Karnataka was not following the orders of the Cauvery River Authority (CRA), a committee headed by the Prime Minister himself.

The SC on Friday ordered Karnataka to release up to 9000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery daily to Tamil Nadu till October 20.

The CRA had given a directive to Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day. However, Karnataka termed it as "unscientific and unjustifiable", with the councillors of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) threatening to intensify their protests in all 198 wards in Bangalore.
