Release innocent gas victims: Bhopal organisations

Press Trust of India

Bhopal: Demanding immediate release of the Bhopal gas tragedy victims arrested by the police for allegedly indulging in violence here on December 3, the organisations fighting for the rights of the gas victims on Monday alleged that even the old and those not present on the spot had been arrested.

"Old and innocent persons and even those who were not present where violent incidents took place on the 27th anniversary of Union Carbide gas tragedy were arrested by the police under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC and we demand their immediate release," Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan's convener, Abdul Jabbar, told PTI.

A man called Naved, who had come to the city that day from Sehore to meet his relatives, was arrested by the police though he had nothing to do with the gas tragedy, Jabbar alleged.

People standing on the roads or in the bylanes were picked up by the police, Jabbar added.

He urged the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and state Home Minister, Uma Shankar Gupta to get such cases scrutinised.

Jabbar's organisation, along with five other organisations of gas leak survivors held a demonstration on Monday calling for immediate withdrawal of criminal cases against 35 named and 2,000 unnamed gas victims in connection with the protest of December 3, 2011.

The organisations demanded immediate release of 14 persons who are in jail for the last one and half months, and an independent inquiry by the government before taking any penal action.
