RComm is a gainer in spectrum battle

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: There is more bad news for GSM mobile operators. The Department of Telecom (DoT) on Wednesday accepted telecom regulator TRAI's subscriber linked criteria for spectrum allocation, which is more stringent than the existing norms.

DoT will set up a panel for long-term policy on spectrum allocation and though it's unlikely to grant spectrum to Reliance Communications before the next High Court hearing, the CDMA major will still be the gainer in this long drawn out battle.

The next court hearing is set for January 3.

The Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) legal notice follows the Network 18 report saying DoT would be granting spectrum in two to three days time.

The Telecom Minister is all set to meet the solicitor-general in the first week of January to discuss the spectrum issue.

If spectrum is awarded to Reliance Communications, then it would give the CDMA major a head start over existing GSM players like Vodafone and Idea.
