Jammu: Reliance Communications has deactivated more than 36,000 SIM connections in Jammu and Kashmir over security concerns. The connections were deactivated just a week after a CNN-IBN report on mobile phone dealers in the state were using fake voter identity cards to issue SIM cards.

In what could have been a security nightmare fake voter cards were being used by Reliance dealers to issue SIM cards in Jammu and Kashmir.

Three people have already been arrested after the expose With SIM cards being often misused by terrorist, a rattled Reliance Communications has deactivated over 36,000 SIM cards in the state.

"They found that the attestation of the gazetted officers was not confirmed by the number given against the name of the gazetted officers," said SP Crime Branch, JP Singh.

The Jammu Crime branch says it's looking into misuse by dealers of other mobile companies too. But this is not the first time such a scare has broken out.

In 2006 Indian SIM cards were recovered from Pakistani terrorists at Kot Bhalwal jail while a year later in 2007 SIM cards obtained on fake IDs of security personnel were recovered at a blast site in Baramulla.

Airtel disabled over 10,000 SIM cards in Jammu and Kashmir that were obtained with fake IDs in 2007 and in May 2009 Indian and Pakistani SIM cards were recovered from a Lashkar-e-Toiba commander in Poonch.

In Jammu and Kashmir, mobile services were started in 2003 and had been restricted because of security concerns.

At present there are over six operators in the state and its high time that they all take corporate responsibility to avoid misuse.
