Reliance energy consumers get shock of their lives

Mumbai: Normal electricity consumption but a 125 per cent increase in the units consumed -- that's what surprised the five-member Sukthankar household. They got this increased electricity bill despite the fact that no new appliance has been added to their house in the last 4 years.

Says Goregaon-based Tejashri Sukthankar, "What surprised me was that the same month's unit consumption over four years has risen from 299 to 422. How is that possible I would like to know, when we are the same amount of people in the house?"

And he is not the only person complaining. Many Reliance Energy consumers in the western suburbs of Mumbai are complaining and most of them attribute it to the newly affixed electronic meters.

Says a housewife, Sangita Pandit, "Since the increase is not a sudden one, most of us haven't realised that there has been one. The tariff increase is understood, but how can they tweak my units consumed?"

And then there are others like Bandra resident, Rashid Ansari, who have been faced with randomly inflated bills and that too on a month when they weren't at home.

"Imagine our plight when we noticed a bill saying we consumed 2,400 units when we weren't home. Our actual consumption was only 58 units. Also, these new meters that Reliance setup are faulty. They keep running even when our main switches are off," says he.

So what is the solution? While you shut your television, you also have to take measures like shutting the switch off to ensure that you reduce your power consumed.

However, more than this, also take the effort to scrutinise your bills to ensure that you do not pay-up more than what you actually need to pay.
