Kolkata: Reliance Retail has sacked 400 employees, almost half of its workforce, in West Bengal.
Opposition from political parties and local traders had prevented the company from opening its fresh food outlets in the state.
The company, which was to open 15 Reliance Fresh stores in and around Kolkata starting July, had hired the employees to manage the shop floors.
Forward Bloc supporters had stoned an upcoming Reliance Fresh store in Girish Park in North Kolkata last month.
The BJP had also attacked the same building, and the Trinamool Congress had ransacked another in Uttarpara.
Reliance Retail had originally planned to invest Rs 2,000 crore in developing the agri-retail network in West Bengal. It is facing similar protests in Orissa and Uttar Pradesh.
