Relief for Indians in UAE, govt lifts travel restrain

New Delhi: There is finally relief for homebound Indians living illegally in Dubai.

After CNN-IBN reported that the Indian government has restricted their travel to only six airports, the government on has lifted the travel restrictions.

Last month, the UAE government announced a three-month amnesty for illegal immigrants, which meant to either get legal status to stay in the country or face deportation.

On the very first day of the amnesty period, nearly 700 out-passes were issued out of a staggering 1,20,000 applicants from Dubai alone.

There are around 1.4 million expatriate Indians in Dubai, many of them contract workers.

During the last general amnesty in UAE from January 1 to June 30, 2003, nearly 1,00,000 illegal residents had benefited.
