Religion is fun, church shows how

Mumbai: For the spirited young Christians in Mumbai, Goa and Gujarat, the church has come up with a novel way to spend their time in a rather spiritual manner.

Close to 300 Christian youth from the states of Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat gathered in Mumbai for the annual conference of the Orthodox Syrian Christian Youth and they had a heady purpose.

“Modern world has got new waves and new streams which have to be addressed by the church as well as the society,” said a member of Orthodox Syrian Church, H G Mar Coorilose.

Of course, there were speeches as well as discussions but the buzzword was making it relevant.

“Self awareness is what I come here for,” said a participant, Siju Thomas.

With most of the songs sung at the event being written by the delegates themselves, ‘fun’ really was the buzzword.

And who says religion has to be boring and bland? “I came here to learn some great songs and probably get a little more spiritually inclined,” said a delegate, Sheba John.

“We have people between the age of 15 to 30. So the challenge really is to keep a right mix of fun as well as spirituality and religion and learning,” said Honorary Secretary of Youth Group MGOCSM, Prakash Uthup.

The conference was not only about lectures with the focus, clearly, on interactivity.

The mood was to present social issues and problems in a more personalised manner.

“We are learning a song we have just written and composed on youth and sexuality,” said a participant.

From terrorism to fame, from fortunes to aspirations – tiny bits of papers spoke volumes in the nimble hands of the active youth at the gathering, where expressions took a different proportion.

“I come here to clear my head,” said a delegate, Swati Varghese.
