Religious leaders condemn HC judgement

New Delhi: Religious leaders are lashing out against the historic victory for the gay community in India. The church has never been comfortable with the issue. And now that consensual gay sex has been decrimnalised in India the church says it will destroy the very moral core of the society.

"Homosexual relations and groups are advocating a new concept of family which is not self sustaining, not good for the future and the society. We will join other groups voicing similar concerns," said spokesperson for the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, Babu Joseph.

For many decades the debate has been raging within the Christian world on whether gays and lesbians are the children of god or not. The intolerance levels are even higher in the Islamic world.

The Ulema in India also believes the gays and lesbians can never be part of a morally good society.

"Homosexuality is Haram (prohibited) and an immoral act. It is unnatural. It is a punishable offence in Shariat. It is against the age old traditions and culture of India and of Islam," said Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Hind's Maulana Mehmud Madani.

Unlike other semitic religion Hinduism does not a have a written code. But Hindu religious leaders have joined ranks with others in condemning homosexuality on grounds of culture and even health

"Customs and traditions are broken. It will increase AIDS," said VHP leader, Giriraj Kishore.

India has often been divided on religious lines. Ironically it is their opposition to homosexuality that has united the pandits, the pastors and the maulana.
