Reluctant Home Minister Chidambaram reports for duty

New Delhi: P Chidambaram was “disinclined” to take over as the new Union Home Minister but accepted the job only because the Prime Minister asked him to.

"I was disinclined" to move to the Home Ministry but "I answered to the call of duty," said Chidambaram on Monday after taking charge of the Home Ministry.

"When the Prime Minister conveyed the decision to me, I will be less than honest if I do not say that I was disinclined," Chidambaram told reporters here while winding up his duties with the Finance Ministry.

"But in a situation like the one we find ourselves, the final call is taken by the party leader, in my case the Congress president and the Prime Minister. I therefore answered to the call of duty," said Chidambaram, who was the Finance Minister till Sunday.

"In life, one must take whatever duties entrusted to one and discharge it. It is in that spirit I leave behind this (Finance) Ministry."

National Security Advisor M K Narayanan briefed Chidamabaram on the internal security in the country after the terror attack on Mumbai.

Narayanan also briefed Chidambaram about the investigation into the terror attack, which the Government alleges was carried out by Pakistan-based elements.
