Drass: Seven years after Indian troops evicted intruders from the Kargil hills, the army on Wednesday held a function in remembrance of the soldiers who died in the war.

Tololing and Tiger Hill are the places where Indian soldiers fought a battle seven years ago, regaining the heights step by step.

But the echoes of gunfire, mortar shells and battle cries still ring in the Drass and Kargil sectors.

For families assembled here in remembrance, the pain returns but so does the pride.

"My son has sent a message that for the honour of the country, everything takes a backseat,'' said Captain Vikram Batra's father, G L Batra.

Some were seeing the area for the first time.

"We are proud of him. I have come here for the first time. I wanted to see for myself where my son has sacrificed his life,'' said Sepoy Gurdeep Singh's father, Mohan Singh.

Soldiers laid wreaths at the war memorial and special prayers were organised in memory of the martyrs.

Operation Vijay Diwas is the success story of those soldiers who demonstrated raw courage and determination to evict Pakistani intruders who occupied the icy peaks.
