New Delhi: Air India has been put on notice by the Chief Information Commissioner for refusing to reply to specific RTI queries pertaining to a flight that was cancelled and used allegedly to ferry former Civil Aviation Praful Patel's daughter Poorna Patel and some IPL players.
On April 20, 2010, a scheduled Delhi-Coimbatore flight was cancelled less than 12 hours before its departure. This flight was then used to ferry IPL players from Chandigarh to Chennai, allegedly done on the request from then civil aviation minister's daughter Poorna Patel.
The official documents accessed through RTI, show the request was made by India Cements Limited, Chennai owners of Chennai Super Kings.
RTI activist Subash Chandra who believes this to be a blatant misuse of public office sought to expose Poorna's role by filing another RTI this time seeking copy of complete documents/correspondence/file etc.
However, Air India has stonewalled his requests citing commercial confidentiality. Now the Chief Information commissioner has put Air India on notice by asking them to reply to the RTI or face a penalty.
This is not the first time that such allegations against the national carrier have surfaced. Air India was pulled up for not revealing details in response to another RTI query that sought information on their Bangalore-male-Bangalore flight IC 965 and 966. According to reports on April 25, 2010 Air India had deployed bigger aircrafts on these two flights reportedly to accommodate family members and close relations of the then Civil Aviation minister Praful Patel.
