New Delhi: Ohio was crucial to Republican nominee John McCain, and he has lost it to the Democrat rival Barack Obama.
No Republican has won the White House without winning Ohio. Going into the election, polls showed Obama with a 3-point lead there.
Obama and McCain are running a tight race in Indiana as results are tallied in the battleground state.
The first results of the US elections have begun to trickle in. Counting has begun, polls have closed in Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
First projections show Vermont going to Obama and Kentucky going to McCain.
There are a few records that will be made as America votes its 44th President to office. There's been a very high voter turnout, which is also being termed as a record one by some.
Polls show economy is the most important issue for voters. Voting day marked the end of the longest presidential campaign season in U.S. history, which is 21 months.
Current presidential favourite and Democrat nominee Barack Obama cast his vote in Chicago.
Obama arrived at the polling station with wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha. Michelle voted with him.
Obama in fact drew first blood- sweeping Dixville Notch, in new Hampshire. This village voted in a Democrat for the first time since 1968.
Republican Candidate John McCain cast his vote in Phoenix, Arizona. But McCain is fighting to protect his home turf, with some analysts suggesting the Republican stronghold may lean Obama's way.
His running mate Sarah Palin cast her vote in Wasilla in her home state Alaska. She came in casuals, reinforcing her hockey mom image.
The voter turnout was heavier than usual in Alaska as well. Speaking after casting her vote, Palin said that as an Alaskan, she brought a fresh perspective to Washington, far removed from mainstream politics.
According to CNN's latest projections, Obama has 207 electoral votes and McCain has 135.
In order to win the presidential election, a candidate needs 270 electoral votes.
When asked if they saw a path to victory, two senior McCain aides said no.
Polls are closed in the key battleground states of Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, but the races there are too close to call.
CNN earlier projected that Obama will win Ohio, a key battleground state with 20 electoral votes.
