Mumbai: The Gothic Italian architecture of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and the mughal domes of the Taj Mahal Hotel have always been a source of pride for all Mumbaikars.

No one ever thought that they will be the target of grenades and gunfire.

“That was a blaze. The roof was a blaze, many floors were a blaze and I went to sleep with an immense sadness in my heart because I was convinced that that was the end of the Taj,” says a prominent Mumbaikar Gerson D'Cunha.

Though NSG commandos were instructed to avoid collateral damage to structures, the buildings still suffered damage.

A heritage expert Jamshed Kanga estimates it will cost Rs 50 rupees or more to restore the Taj. It won’t be easy for the modern day management to do what Jamshedji Tata had done.

“He bought geysers from Germany, chandeliers from France and Venice and managed to create a structure that was iconic,” says heritage conservation expert Jamshed Kanga.

Even though experts feel that it will take an year to restore the Taj to its old glory, Mumbaikars can take pride in the fact that the five-feet thick walls of this structure could withstand even three days of heavy bombardment.
